Matheran

Trip: Mumbai > Matheran > Mumbai

I was going to Mumbai for my Nitie interview and hence came up with this trip. Bhaiya and Vikash agreed and we were on. Thanks to IRCTC, tickets were booked well in advance for the toy train that leaves Narel for Matheran and offers amazingly panoramic view. The three of us reached Matheran by noon hungry and sweating.

It was March and as we realized later the best time to visit Matheran is when the rains wash off a part of the red soil there and the rest of it is settled to make Matheran green. We first settled in a restaurant to have some food. The main road is not very long and in next half an hour we had room cost of half the hotels there. We settled in a modest accommodation which was an a/c too.

Matheran is a spread on a small plateau. One can walk around the place. In case you need a ride, there are horses available for the day at a reasonable price. We chose to walk. The first day was spent walking to the sunset point. The idea is to walk near the edge so as to cover the maximum viewpoints.

The second day was dedicated to the centre where there is a lake and a temple. We sat there and ordered for some pakodas. One of us located a cane juice shop and we ended up drinking three glasses of that eventually. We returned to station directly as our train was scheduled at around 4.
