Mirissa, Sri Lanka

  • Mirissa is more famous for whale watching as the ferries start from here for the middle of the sea. The activity is for the elderlies and is getting costlier every year.
  • The beach is one of the most beautiful you will come across. If you want to go for the secluded and cosy one, this is it.
  • Weligama is equal distance from here and Unawatuna. There is a Marriott not very far in case you want to go for a luxury hotel.
Our first morning in Sri Lanka was going to be a hectic one. Our driver had suggested a whale watching tour early morning and we decided to go for it. Hence at 5 in the morning we were racing towards a beach called Mirissa. By the time we reached the sun was about to rise. It was glorious. Early morning beach view is generally amazing - the small sandy beach of Mirissa takes it to the next level.

The ferries that were to take us to the middle of sea was a little away from the beach but we had time till 7. The tour is government regulated and a hence we collected our tickets worth LKR6000 (USD40) each before settling in our ferry. About ten such ferries leave at once and move in different direction. This helps figure the location of whales. The ships have their own signals as we navigated quickly through the sea and watched the whales thrice in a span of two hours.

Diving Sperm Whales @ Mirissa

The experience was not among the top of the list but at least we checked couple of boxes. We decided to move back to hotel for rest before we go for the buzzing Unawatuna. Closer to Mirissa is a surfing haven called Weligama and my wife insisted I try surfing there. I obliged and took an LKR2500 (USD15) surfing lesson. It was amusingly good game as I balanced my big fat legs on the surfing board for an hour. Drenched and tired, I gave up earlier than planned and changed into drier clothes.

Beautiful Mirissa

We ate our lunch at hotel. Since it was our first day, we didn't experiment. The bread we had bought yesterday combined with Haldiram's ready to eat Matar Paneer made a good lunch for us. It was time to take a couple hours sleep before hitting the beach again. Unawatuna is the local beach of Galle although it has its own ecosystem. A tuk tuk asks LKR100 (USD2) to take you directly to the beach.
